1. a set of old work clothes with pants and shirt
2. stiff boots
3. newspaper
4. Halloween mask
5. a dummy head
6. lawn chair
7. bucket of Halloween candies

How to do the Halloween scarecrow trick? First you need to build the Halloween scarecrow. To do this, take a set of work clothes, with stiff boots, pants, shirt, etc. Fill it with rolled newspaper to make it stiff and sit up right on its own. Then,

1. Put a Halloween mask on a dummy head and put that head on the body.
2. Sit the body in a lawn chair. 
3. Put the assembled form of a person in a Halloween mask in a shadowed corner under a tree
4. Place a bucket of Halloween candy in its lap.

What happens in the Halloween scarecrow trick?

People approaching the house looked about for someone who might scare them. They'd see the "Halloween scarecrow" holding the candy, point and wait for it to jump as they approach for the candy.

The trick is that a live, real person, who was hiding in a different location, would then jump out and surprise them. This would scare the daylight out of a lot of people.
